Introduction, Traditional Activities(By HoGeun Lee)

*Introduction
We went for a homestay for 2days on June 28th, 2014. The day before the homestay, we got a schedule about the programs. There were lots of activities like cutural performances, playing traditional games and making a ketupat. We met at 7-eleven at Taylor’s University at 9:30am. We departed for the homestay, which was at Malacca at 10:00am. It took about 3hours to get there. During the journey there, some people fell asleep, and some people talked to each other. After 3hours, we arrived at our destination. Our homestay`s name is “Kem Modal Insan”. When we arrived, people there greeted us. We got off the bus and went to the main hall. Once there, we saw a group of students from Hongkong. We expected to live with them but sadly we didn’t.

*Traditional Activities
Batik is a traditional craft in Malaysia and Indonesia. So Malaysia is a very famous country for Batik. It is an art of dyeing woven cloth by using wax compound to cover parts of the cloth, which are not to be dyed. The origin of batik printing dates back 2000 years. Also it is believed to come to Indonesia from India. Motifs of flowers and butterflies are commonly sketched in stylized forms on the batik. Batik is one of the dye technique and it was designated as a UNESCO intangible cultural asset.
At the homestay, after making the Ketupat, all of us painted a batik. At first, the artist taught us how to paint it. It was so enjoyable because I like drawing. My other friends also said to me that it was so fun!

We used paints and water to paint the Batik. The type of colors we uesd was so beautiful. But drawing the pictures was very difficult because I`m not good at drawing. Nonetheless, this time was very fun for me. Finally, we dried off our own pictures completely. It took 30 to 40 minutes to finish.

There are two kinds of tradtional clothes in Malaysia: “Baju Melayu” and “Baju Kurung”. Baju Melayu is the men’s traditional clothes and Baju Kurung is the women’s traditional clothes.

On that evening, we tried those kinds of clothes and learned how to use the “Sarong”. Sarong is a kind of blanket. When we got to know the many functions of the Sarong, we were really surprised. It can be used as clothes or hat even a basket for carrying something. And also, it can be a weapon to protect someone from robbers and we can use it as a towel to wipe ourselves dry. At that time, we admired Malaysian’s creativity. After the master’s teaching, we tried to wear the Sarong in many ways. You can see the result below.

Me and Ho Geun Lee tried to put the Sarong around our bodies like this picture. It was really hot when I tried this. But it was an interesting experience.
There were a lot of colours in traditional clothes. When we tried the Baju Melayu, we felt that it was very similar to the Korean one. It was very comfortable to move around.

*Traditional Games
After the Batik painting program, we played some traditional games. They were the “Gasing” and the “Congkak”.

Gasing is a game of spinning top. It uses rope and a top. We can roll the rope around the top and spin it to the ground. When we were doing that, almost everyone gave up, because it was hard for us to play. But I did it continuously. It was really interesting to me. All Hongkong people who were there, were really surprised when I succeeded in spinning the top. We also had a battle with friends. Although it was really hot outside, we all enjoyed these games.

Congkak is also a traditonal game in Malaysia. Its name originated from the word ‘ Congak’. Congak means mental calculation. Since it is important to usethe mind for calculation, so the name originated from that word. It uses a game board made of wood and beads. People can win when they have more beads than their opponents. When we tried this game, we couldn’t understand the rules in the beginning, so we had some difficulties.. But when we did it many times, we understood the rules and played excitingly.

Rice is Malaysian’s staple food. In the evening, we went to the farm. The farm was very wide and there were a lot of rice in the field. I could see the rice in detail. The grains of the rice were not ripe yet, so its color was green and the inside of the grains was filled with liquid and was white. It felt so smooth like oil. I heard that the farmers can sow seeds easily, because they have sowing machines. All they need to do is to put the seeds into the sowing machines and it is done. When they harvest the rice, they use the motor tractor. It is very useful to harvest.
Since we played traditional games, we were really tired at that time. But when we saw the beautiful farm, our tiredness went away. The air was really fresh. We could see lots of insects there. We took some pictures there too.

We made the traditional basket of Malaysia, named Ketupat. It is made by weaving young palm leaves called janur. Ketupat is used for boiled rice. We learned how to make the Ketupat, but we can’t make this because it was very difficult to make. So the master’s wife helped us to make the basket. Let me explain to you now how to make the Ketupat. First, you need two palm leaves. And tie the palm leaves three times around your fingers. Then you weaves across those palm leaves. Finally, the leaves become a basket magically.

I would like to introduce the traditional Malaysian food “onde-onde”.
Onde-Onde is one of the famous traditional food in Malaysia. They are either made from sweet potato or glutinous rice flour.
When we ate it, It was really sweet and delicious. So many people likes its taste. We saw how to make Onde-Onde and it was similar with “Songpyeon”, which is the Korean traditional rice cake. its taste was really good, I hope everyone will eat this onde-onde. They taste totally great!

The next food is curry puff. Curry puff is a popular Malaysian food. It is a small pie consists of curry with chicken and potatoes in a deep-fried or baked pastry shell. The curry is quite thick to prevent it from oozing out of the snack.
When we first saw this food, we realized that is very similar to dumplings so it was very familiar to us.
We tried this food at night with hot tea. Since I like curry, I thought it tasted really delicious.

Durian is a thorny, round or oblong shaped fruit, and the color of durian is brown. It has a very sickening smell. People who encountered the Durian have different reactions. Some say it has a sickenning smell, awful, or disgusting. Other people say the smell is fragrant and tastes good. The color of its pulp is yellow, sometimes red and comes with a seed in the middle. When we smelled the Durian, some people just hesitated and didn't get a chance to eat it, but to those who ate that fruit, they said it tastes sweet, some say it’s like a milkshake or a creme brulee, creamy and just like cheese. Each person had different reactions to that fruit.
As you see, Durian is a smelly fruit, so most people hate that fruit. But it has a lot of benefits too. But to be honest, I hate the Durian. Its smell is really bad for me and most of the people who came with us also agreed.

Reflection(By Byung Chan Choi)

Fabulous homestay house
Fabulous homestay house
When we entered the homestay house, hot weather hit me and I immediately noticed its presence. After we ate some lunch, we started making some kind of traditional rice basket (ketupat) with two long leaves. Mrs. Mama showed us how to make ketupat .She moved her fingers and used two leaves on her palm and it became a beautiful tiny basket. Next, while we were trying to make the woven basket .we couldn’t make it like her did. We couldn't found out origin presence. we' re looking around the person, who shaping that leaves, making frown on their face, included Gary and Heng even though a Malaysian also hard to made it.
After that we were going to make some kind of drawing by traditional paints. I was hanging out with Malaysian friends, poured the paints on the others canvas. we draw a flower, leaf was blue and crimson, we've never seen before in the world.
Some of us have different nation. But we were dressed traditional clothes and playing traditional game. Border of the country boundary was broken.
How many chances do us as Korean experienced Malaysian culture? I've never experienced before and I couldn't forget it in my life. The people we met were so kind even we were foreigner to them.
Like smell of durian. I couldn't forget that experience. Smell of durian still stayed in my tongue. Homestay could make to feel of family, stayed in my part of memory.
